Do you want to ensure your students are fully engaged and supported while reading decodable texts? Research indicates that providing immediate feedback and guidance during reading is crucial for helping students develop accurate decoding skills and confidence. Join Rachel Scott for this hands-on, interactive workshop as we lean on Wiley Blevins’ book “Choosing and Using Decodable Texts” to explore practical “during-reading” routines that can be used in small groups. Rachel will focus specifically on how teachers can help initiate the first read, provide real-time feedback, check comprehension, develop fluency, and retell/write. Get ready to maximize the effectiveness of your small group reading sessions with decodable texts! Rachel’s expertise as a literacy instructional specialist will equip you with the tools and strategies you need to understand, plan, and implement successful “during-reading” routines in a small group using decodable texts.

This is workshop two of four for the series titled “Tools and Strategies for Small-group Instruction Using Decodable Texts.”

Key Takeaways:

  1. Learn how to give timely and constructive feedback to help students correct mistakes and build decoding accuracy.
  2. Discover how to use guiding questions to enhance comprehension and keep students engaged with the text.
  3. Explore practical strategies for helping students decode unfamiliar words during reading, promoting self-reliance and confidence.
  4. Understand the importance of interactive reading and how to implement techniques that involve all students actively in the reading process.
