Do you want to ensure your students can retain what they have learned after reading decodable texts? Research indicates that activities conducted after reading are essential for reinforcing phonics skills and ensuring that students can apply what they have learned in new contexts. Join Rachel Scott for this hands-on, interactive workshop as we lean on Wiley Blevins’ book “Choosing and Using Decodable Texts” to explore practical “after-reading” routines that can be used in small groups. Rachel will focus specifically on comprehension checks, making meaning from our reading, reinforcing target phonics skills, and building fluency. Get ready to maximize the effectiveness of your small group reading sessions with decodable texts! Rachel’s expertise as a literacy instructional specialist will equip you with the tools and strategies you need to understand, plan, and implement successful “after-reading” routines in a small group using decodable texts.

This is workshop three of four for the series titled “Tools and Strategies for Small-group Instruction Using Decodable Texts.”

Key Takeaways:

  1. Discover activities that reinforce phonics skills learned during reading, ensuring students can apply these skills independently.
  2. Learn how to use word work activities to help students practice and solidify their decoding abilities.
  3. Explore strategies for facilitating comprehension discussions that deepen students' understanding of the text and enhance critical thinking.
  4. Understand how to guide students in applying their decoding skills and comprehension strategies to new texts and contexts, promoting transfer of learning.
